Sexual films DON’T desensitize men and actually improve sexual performance, a recent study claims. Researchers analysed data and questionnaires from 280 male volunteers. Each participant revealed how often they watched porn a week. The questionnaire asked them about sexual desire and erectile dysfunction. Participants also watched so-called ‘vanilla’ porn in a laboratory. Men who watched more sex films at home were more aroused in the lab. Researchers said the findings prove viewing erotica ‘is not desensitizing and perhaps even sensitised the men to respond more strongly. The researchers also found there is no relationship between viewing sex films and the incidence of erectile dysfunction in men who are sexually active.T
The study was carried out by Nicole Prause at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour, and Jim Pfaus, a professor in Concordia’s Department of Psychology. ‘When we analysed the data, we found that the men who had watched more sex films at home were more aroused when they watched sex films in the lab, While one could object that this was expected since they like sex films, the result is important because clinicians often claim that men get desensitized by watching these films. ‘They are responding more strongly to very vanilla (tame) erotica than the guys for whom the films are more novel. ‘While this association doesn’t establish a cause, it proves viewing erotica at home is not desensitizing and perhaps even sensitized the men to respond more strongly.
